Kazakiri (風切) is a playable character from the Senran Kagura video game series. She makes her debut in Senran Kagura: New Link, alongside Ui, Hiyori, and Amane, starting off as a major antagonist for the Kagan Arc before becoming a protagonist as part of the Amagi Sealing Congregation.
She held a deeply rooted hatred towards the Kagan, and hated Hibari in particular. She, along with Amane, helped free Toki, a Kagura from 900 years ago who also possesses the Kagan.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Kazakiri is a short, petite girl with a fair complexion, dark pink hair with two long bangs and light blue eyes. Her outfit is a dark grey school uniform and a black jacket, with a white collar and tie underneath. Her most notable feature is the pink eyepatch she wears over her hair, which resembles the Kagan in design. These petal designs are fixed to the ends of both of her sleeves as well.
Personality[]
While initially coming across as a cheerful young girl in her first appearance, Kazakiri's true personality shines quickly. She is shown to be jealous, almost to an insane degree, towards Hibari and harbors an intense hatred towards the Kagan as a whole. This hatred guided her for a time, always lashing out at Hibari and ranting about how unfairly she was treated.
When not around Hibari, she becomes more calm and a little meek at points, especially around Toki. When in Hanadome Village, she was shown to be a very shy and quiet girl who held no real value in herself, before the hatred truly settled in.
After coming back to the light, Kazakiri shows express amounts of remorse for her actions and wants to atone. She's also very awkward around Hibari and prefers to avoid her outright, but she's sometimes forced to interact with her by her friends.
Background[]
Kazakiri was born in Hanadome Village as an only child to a poor family. She was close to Ui, seeing her as an older sister that she never had, and was friends with Hiyori and Amane.
Being the only child of her family, Kazakiri bore all of the weight of their expectations and hopes for her, both as a shinobi and a Kagan hopeful. She endured brutal training for years, but Kazakiri endured it out of the hopes of developing Kagan of her own. Ui, who was also a Kagan hopeful, became quite close to her.
After Ui failed to develop Kagan, following the deaths of her father and sister, Kazakiri put more pressure on herself to develop them. She held out hope that she could attain the Kagan and become the village's new protector and bring honor to her poorly family. She repeatedly ignored Hiyori's worries and pushed herself to her limits repeatedly.
Unfortunately, Kazakiri failed to develop the Kagan. She was ostracized by the village and seen as a disappointment by her parents, factors that drove Kazakiri closer and closer to the brink of madness. The final straw was when she learned that Hibari, the Heiress of the Kagan Clan, developed the eyes despite not wanting them at all.
Story[]
Senran Kagura: New Link[]
Kagan Arc Their first mission is to infiltrate the mansion of the Kagan Clan in order to get a certain old book for Toki. Kazakiri ran into Hibari and couldn't contain her rage. Not only she doesn't pull any punches but continues to pummel her even after Hibari is defeated, until she's saved by Yagyū. Days later, Kazakiri and Amane decide to ambush Tohno Village, although they're stopped by Hiyori and Ui before they can do any harm. On the way back, Toki realizes Amane and Kazakiri are conflicted about having to fight their old friends and tells them to go back to them while she destroys the Shinobi world alone, although the two refuse. Kazakiri is becoming more mean-spirited and unstable due to her growing envy towards Hibari. Amane tries several times to reassure her that she doesn't need Kagan to be strong, but it goes on deaf ears. Later Kazakiri ambush Hibari, Yagyū, Haruka, Ui and Hiyori into a blood barrier. Kazakiri has one last fight against Hibari and despite the latter's recent training, she's defeated once again. This is what finally convinces Kazakiri that she's strong enough on her own and doesn't need Kagan to be special, although she concedes that morally, Hibari is the true winner. After Amane's fight with Haruka, she and Kazakiri decide to change sides and join the Shinobi Base. Together with Ui and Hiyori, they help in the final battle against Toki. Listening to Toki's bakcstory full of rejection is the final nail in the coffin to convince Kazakiri to give up on her purse of Kagan. Back at the Shinobi Base, Kazakiri, Amane, Ui and Hiyori form a faction named Amagi Sealing Congregation, with a redeemed Toki as their leader. Kazakiri's deeds are forgiven, although she's awkward around Hibari. Character Story Eventually, Kazakiri opens up to the girls, making ocassional hangouts with her cousins and bonding with Imu for being less favored by their families over a more talented relative. Later, she realizes that she had dedicated her time in the village to becoming an excellent shinobi, but at the expense of any kind of social life or cooking skills. After improving her cooking, she confides in the Instructor that she wanted the Kagan so badly to prove her self-worth, but now believes that even if she had it, it wouldn't have made her feel any better. It's only after getting the love and recognition from Hibari and her friends at the Amagi Sealing Congregation that she can finally accept herself. Orochi's Resurrection Arc After the final fight against Hyōki and Suiren, the Instructor together with the Amagi Sealing Congregation, arrive in time to get medical help for the injured. Gameplay[]
Kazakiri fights with her giant claw gauntlets, focusing on vicious and aggressive slashing attacks. The claws are rather flexible and have impressive range, though her defenses leave a lot to be desired.
Trivia[]
- She's the third character in the series to have an eyepatch, alongside Mirai and Yagyū. Like both of them, her eye isn't actually missing. She wears it because the flower pattern resembles Kagan.
- Her name translates to 'Wind Shear'
- Her faction is the Amagi Sealing Congregation.
- Her backstory is similar to Neji Hyuga from Naruto, a shinobi coming from a clan with an eye-themed power who resents her cousin for having a better lot in life. She even tried to kill her in a fit of rage, though they make peace with each other.
