An Ayakashi ("Yōma with an Human appearance") is a pretty common kind of Yōma appearing notably in SKBR:N capable of possessing a dead shinobi corpse. For this reason, they are a privileged target to Shinobi groups.
Description[]
The Ayakashi has no known set proper appearance, personality, language nor expression on its own, first appearing as disembodied entities with two red glowing eyes floating in the air. Strong and subtle, it apparently aims to find a dead shinobi to possess, up to killing one by itself.
Upon possession, the victim obtains a blood red skin, cat/snake-like eyes, and a color shader, as well as an erratic behavior. The victim is also given some particular attacks and says the lines it would say during its life, forming a half-perfect possession called a Scarlet.
It is assumed to be the most variable kind, depending on the possessed victim, and most cases of possessions include non-Elite shinobi made stronger and harder, and possibly attacking in packs or alone. They often hide in their disembodied form even when possessing, becoming active and hostile when approached very close.
According to BR:N's main story, a possession can be cancelled by defeat.

The Ayakashi form for Shinobi a strategic hazard instead of just a simple danger as the possession of shinobi susceptible to know sensitive data can lead to leaks dangerous in the war between the Good and Bad Shinobi, worsened by that the Ayakashi tend to roam in populated areas, making themselves hard to kept secret. The Shinobi are usually ordered to take them out to prevent such cases.
They are attracted not only by blood but also by regrets and torments of grudged spirits, and measures order Shinobi to lay their victim to rest immediately.
Known Cases[]
- Scarlet Ryōki : In Burst Re:Newal, an Ayakashi has ambushed Ryōki, Miyabi and Imu, killed Ryōki and possessed her. In her Scarlet form, she was defeated by Miyabi with the use of the Forbidden Art Blood Riot and freed, but this only left her alive enough to tell her last words to Miyabi for her to transmit to her sisters.
- Crimson Squad : The possession of the members of the Crimson Squad excluding Homura by Orochi has similar effects to an Ayakashi's, though possibly to another extent as with Scarlet Haruka. The victims became Scarlet versions of themselves that Homura have to defeat.
